  17. <p>     The infamous Mafia code of omerta, or silence, has been
  18. taking a beating lately. Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano, a
  19. witness against Gambino crime boss John Gotti in a New York City
  20. courtroom, is only the latest mobster to testify on the misdeeds
  21. of his cronies in exchange for lenient treatment. Last week
  22. Mafia gunmen appeared to send a brutal message to all would-be
  23. squealers by shooting and gravely wounding the sister of federal
  24. informer Peter (Fat Pete) Chiodo.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Patricia Capozzalo, a 38-year-old mother of three, was
  27. shot in the back and neck by masked men in front of her
  28. Brooklyn home. Investigators called the shooting highly unusual:
  29. female relatives of mobsters have traditionally been spared by
  30. avenging hit men.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     Chiodo, who began cooperating with prosecutors after
  33. surviving an attempted Mob rubout last year, is scheduled to
  34. appear at the Gotti trial. Federal officials also regard him as
  35. a prime witness against alleged Lucchese crime boss Vittorio
  36. Amuso.
